Rain Disaster......... Flooded Houses.... Fun!

It started raining on Saturday 30th January..... but only lightly... Sunday it started coming down heavier and we had noticed a puddle in Rob's office before we went to bed - but we've had little leaks before and we had arranged to have someone come to do some excavation work in a few weeks - so we weren't overly stressed....

By Monday morning - the entire house was in 1-2cm deep water.... it was pelting down all night - in 2 days I believe we got about 420mm - and it wasn't letting up...

We called the guy who was going to do the excavation work - but he wasn't able to do it as an emergency job - so - Rob organised to hire an excavator and my friend Melissa came over with her partner Christian - and Rob and Christian tackled it as best they could to at least divert some water away from the house....

The before shot... I had grass (most of the grass had grown back from the hay that we had at the end of last year) - you can see that there's a drainage channel that ran alongside the house.. that is full of water - and the water wasn't "draining" - it was useless....

Along the side of the house - previous owners (at some point) - put concrete on there and painted it.... we think it may have been to stop water getting into the house - but it was all cracked and the pest control guy had said that we were better off with an exposed slab so that we could keep an eye on whether termites were making their way into the house...

(Oh - did I mention that the reason we'd organise for the excavation work is that we do have termites - and we're trying to work out how they got in - but also trying to put into place a system to make sure that when they're gone - they don't come back....? Doesn't it just sound like we're having a HEAP of fun with this house??? heh!)

Rob on the excavator and Christian helping... the work begins.... still doesn't look - TOO - bad....

My big mud moat.....

more moat..... the water is now being directed down the side of the house and over the driveway....

over the driveway - and into the back yard.....

Rob decided while he had the excavator that he'd clear out some large rocks that had been left when the guys put fill in the yard so that we could put the shed in....

and yes, my back yard is now ruined too!!!

(although - with the rain we had - the lawn started growing again - I've mowed the back yard and it looks reasonably good again.... haven't been able to mow the front yard yet - but it looks worse than these pics show..... will try to get more pics at some point)
